The proposed draft does not reflect the comments, concerns and suggestions that have been submitted to date. Once all public comment has been received, a final draft will be circulated for the final public hearing and for adoption by the Board of County Commissioners (BCC).


Do you know what the requirments are to own a dog or cat in Santa Fe County?


  • All dogs and cats over the age of 3 months must have a rabies shot
  • All dogs over the age of 3 months must have a County License
  • A copy of the dogs current rabies vaccination is required to obtain a license
  • It is unlawful for any owner of an animal to fail, refuse, or neglect to provide said animal with proper and adequate food, water, shade or shelter
  • All persons owning or having charge of an animal must keep the animal restrained in their premises; It is unlawful to allow any dog to run at large
  • It is unlawful for a pet owner to allow animals to persistently or continuously bark, howl or make noise common to their species or otherwise disturb the peace
