Disposal of trash at convenience centers requires a punch or punches from a solid waste punch card or a bag tag.  Bag tags should be applied one per conventional garbage bag that does not exceed 30 gallons.  Each punch is equivalent to 5 cubic yards (i.e. 135 cubic feet) of solid waste.  Loads over 15 cubic yards (405 cubic fees) are not accepted.  Please note that proof of identity is required for all permit purchases, and proof of Santa Fe County residency is required on any purchases of bag tags, 3-Trip Punch cards, 6-Trip Punch cards, or 12-Trip punch cards.  See below for acceptable documentation.

You can also download a permit application and mail it with a check to the Santa Fe County Treasurer's Office, 100 Catron Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501 . DO NOT MAIL PERMIT APPLICATIONS TO ANY OTHER OFFICE. 

 Accepted Payment Methods

  • Mailed applications can  be accepted only at the County Treasurer's Office.
  • Only money orders or checks accepted at Public Works Complex or Satellite Offices. Cash and credit cards are not accepted.
  • Cash, money orders, and checks are accepted at the Treasurer’s Office.
  • Credit cards are not accepted at any location.
  • Residents are required to sign an agreement that the permit is for personal use and cannot be used by another person or entity.
  • Lost, stolen, or destroyed permits and bag tags will not be replaced by the County.
  • Permits Starting dated 2014 to present do not expire until completely punched.

Three, six, and twelve punch permits may only be purchased by residents of Santa Fe County that live outside an incorporated city. Patrons that reside within incorporated areas may only purchase the 1-trip permit. Bag tags are valid for any conventional garbage bag that does not exceed 30 gallons.

Low Income, Senior or Veteran Discounts

Residents shall be entitled to a $5 reduced fee for the 6 Trip Punch Permit and a $10 reduced fee for the 12 Trip Punch Permit if:

  • They have an adjusted gross income less than $24,000 on their most recent federal income tax return
  • They are 65 years of age or older
  • They are veterans, as verified by the United States Department of Defense DD form 214 of release or discharge from active duty with an honorable discharge or of service-disabled veteran status by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In no event shall a resident be eligible for more than one reduced fee. For example, a resident who qualified for both the Senior and Veteran discount and wanted to purchase a 6 Trip Punch Permit would be entitled to only a single $5 reduced fee. For residents who may qualify for both the senior and the low-income credit, only the higher credit of $10 will be applied.

Acceptable Documentation

Please see the criteria below for establishing proof of your identity, Santa Fe County residency, and discount status as applicable for your Santa Fe County Solid Waste Permit purchase.  Please note that proof of identity is required for all permit purchases, and proof of Santa Fe County residency is required on any purchases of bag tags, 3-Trip Punch cards, 6-Trip Punch cards, or 12-Trip punch cards.  One document may be used to establish your identity, residency, or discount status if it matches all required criteria within that section.  Inelligible orders will be refunded.  All completed permit sales are final.  If you have documentation that is not listed below, and you want to verify if it would be acceptable, please contact our Public Works office at 505-992-3010 prior to placing your order.

Proof of Identity:

This must be a valid, current photo ID that includes your legal name.  If the name on the submitted ID is different than your current legal name, please include documentation confirming your name change or other applicable variations.  Name must match the name input on the permit order form.  Acceptable documents that meet the criteria above include:

  • Driver's License
  • Real ID
  • Passport
  • Consular Identification Card
  • Permanent Resident card
  • School ID
  • Any government-issued photo ID

Proof of Santa Fe County Residency:

This must show a valid Santa Fe County address as a primary residence or business address and your legal name. Santa Fe County residency is defined as being located within Santa Fe County, but outside an incorporated city. If the name on the submitted documentation is different than your current legal name, please include documentation confirming your name change or other applicable variations.  Acceptable documents that meet the criteria above include:

  • A Government-issued photo ID
  • A deed or affidavit showing your ownership of a property within Santa Fe County.
  • A deed or affidavit in the name of a Trust, LLC, or business entity showing ownership of a property within Santa Fe County and supporting documents establishing your ownership stake in that Trust, LLC, or business entity.
  • A current lease agreement that shows you are renting or leasing a property within Santa Fe County.
  • 2 Utility bills issued within the last 45 days that confirm a physical address within Santa Fe County.  Cell phone bills or other utility bills where service is not fixed to a specific location are not acceptable

Proof of Discount Elligibility:

Senior Discount:

This must be a government-issued ID that includes your legal name and date of birth.  If the name on the submitted ID is different than your current legal name, please include documentation confirming your name change or other applicable variations.  Acceptable documents that meet this criteria include:

  • Driver's license
  • State ID
  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport
  • Any other government-issued ID that shows your legal name and date of birth.

Veteran Discount:

This must be a government-issued ID that confirms your prior military service.  Acceptable documents that meet this criteria include:

  • Department of Defense DD form 214
  • Discharge from active duty with honorable discharge documentation
  • Documentation of service-disabled Veteran status

Low Income Discount:

This must be a government-issued tax document issued within the last 2 years that reflects your Adjusted Gross Income at or below $24,000.  Acceptable documents that meet this criteria include:

  • US Income Tax form 1040
  • US Income Tax form 1040A
