Election Worker Roles & Responsibilities
Presiding Judges (PJ):
- Oversees and is in charge of the election board and maintains order at the polling location
- Maintains oversight of polling area, ensures no campaigning or disruptions interfere with the voting process
- Handles exceptions, where a voter must be processed through alternative procedures
- Facilitates the Provisional and Spoiled Ballot requirement
- Responsible for polling location, equipment, supplies and materials
- Contacts election board members prior to election day to verify appointment and assignment
- Supervises poll officials, delegates work, and ensures everyone is performing the duties assigned
- Maintains and enforces impartiality among voters and poll officials
- Ensures ballot accounting during reconciliation
- Communicates with the County Clerk’s Bureau of Election Office
- Delivers election items to the County Clerk after poll closure
- Receives Absentee Ballots at polling locations
Election Judges (EJ):
- Greets voters and directs them to the check-in station
- Monitors traffic flow, ensuring continuous movement
- Assists voters with any questions
- Monitors signage throughout the day
- Monitors voting booth area for supplies and custodial needs
- Issues sample ballots upon request
- Operates and monitors the tabulators
Election Clerks (EC):
- Issues voter permits and ballots
- Escalates voter transaction exceptions to Presiding Judge
- May assist with ballot reconciliation
- Acts as Deputy Clerk of Registration and is responsible for processing Same Day Registration (SDR)
Election Technician / Messenger:
- Delivers ballot boxes, poll books, keys, election supplies, and other materials pertaining to the election
- Collects Absentee Ballots and removable media storage devices from polling places and delivers them to locations designated by the County Clerk
- Prepares election supply boxes
- Assists with tabulator certification and other tasks as assigned
- Performs the set‐up of equipment at polling locations
- Has strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Able to work effectively in a fast‐paced, deadline‐driven environment
- Proficient in computer applications, including voter registration systems and election management software
- Commited to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the integrity and accessibility of the electoral process
- Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds (lbs.)
- Must have a valid driver’s license and pass a Santa Fe County Defensive Driving course
Pay is as follows:
Messengers: $24.00 hourly
Early Voting: $21.00 – $24.00 hourly
Election Day: $350.00 - $400.00 flat daily rate
To qualify for these positions, you must be able to multitask and prioritize, be detail‐oriented, and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
