WHAT:
Announcement of the public release of the Record of Decision (ROD) for the Buckman Direct Diversion.  This ROD describes the federal decision to allow construction of the Buckman Direct Diversion Project on federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.  This ROD is the most importantof the many permits and approvals required to build the project.

WHEN:Monday, February 11, 2008 - 1:30 p.m.

WHERE:
Santa Fe County Chambers, 102 Grant Avenue, Santa Fe

WHY:
Notice of public availability of the Record of Decision (ROD) on the BDD project issued by the Santa Fe National Forest Service and the Taos Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management was published on Feb. 11, 2008 in the Federal Register.

The ROD has two purposes:  1) it is a legal document detailing a formal decision from two federal government agencies; and 2) equally as important, it explains the “why” of that decision.

The Environmental Impact Statement preparation process that has culminated in the ROD has taken more than six years to complete.

Project partners will be on hand to discuss the federal environmental impact statement process, answer questions about the ROD and the Buckman Direct Diversion Project and provide an update on the status of the BDD.

About the Buckman Direct Diversion Project

The Buckman Direct Diversion (BDD) project will provide a sustainable way for the City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County and their limited partner, Las Campanas, to access surface water supplies by diverting San Juan-Chama Project water and native Rio Grande water to reduce their reliance on over-taxed ground water resources.  The BDD will divert water from the Rio Grande, pipe it underground to a water treatment plant near the Municipal Recreational Complex, then treat and deliver the water to customers of the City of Santa Fe and Santa Fe County.Las Campanas will receive and treat a portion of the water for its residents at a facility that is not part of the BDD. Construction on the BDD is expected to begin in 2008.
