Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners Begin Process to Extend Deadline for Licensing and Registering Short Term Rentals to June 1, 2023; Process Enhancements Also Announced

The Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners (Board) has started the process to formally extend the deadline for Short-Term Rentals (STRs) to be registered or licensed until June 1, 2023.  At a Special Meeting on February 21, 2023, the Board authorized staff to publish title and general summary of an ordinance to extend the deadline.  The public hearing on the proposed ordinance will be held at the Board’s regular meeting on March 14.

In addition to the extended deadline, the proposed ordinance would authorize Temporary Registrations and Licenses for STRs operating prior to June 1, 2023, that do not comply with the County’s Sustainable Land Development Code, provided that the owner applicant has made the application(s) necessary to remedy the noncompliance prior to June 1, 2023.

“The Board heard citizen concerns about the deadline as well as the challenges for people who have STRs that do not comply with the Sustainable Land Development Code,” Board Chair Anna Hansen said.  “We intend to offer a temporary solution to those who act promptly to remedy noncompliance.”

“Notwithstanding the anticipated extension, STR owners are encouraged to apply as soon as possible,” Chair Hansen said.

The Board action coincides with the following application process enhancements:

A dedicated STR number – 505-995-2700 – that STR owners can call for more information, to schedule an in-person application appointment, and to review applications prior to the appointment;

Enhanced in-person application appointments designed to allow compliant STR owners to complete the process in one visit and leave with a temporary business registration or license;

The option of submitting applications electronically via email to Cortiz@santafecountynm.gov. If submitting via email, please call 505-995-2700 to confirm receipt of your submittal; and

Augmented frequently asked questions and new applications and checklists, which are available at https://www.santafecountynm.gov/growth_management/building_development/str.

Growth Management Department staff are committed to helping constituents navigate the registration and licensing process and to deal with any noncompliance issues that are identified,” Growth Management Department Director, Penny Ellis-Green said.
