County Rebrands Longstanding Teen Court Program as Uplift Youth Program: A Restorative Path Forward

Santa Fe, NM- Santa Fe County is proud to announce the rebranding of its longstanding Teen Court Program to the newly named Uplift Youth Program. This change reflects a progressive shift in philosophy from a perceived punitive response to restorative, supportive youth services.

Initially founded in 1994, the Teen Court Program has served as a vital diversion program for youth involved in traffic and misdemeanor offenses, as well asd school code of conduct violations. For over three decades, the program has partnered with schools, courts, and community organizations to provide youth with opportunities for accountability and second chances. However, as the community evolves, so too must its approaches to youth justice and support. With support from community stakeholders, youth, and families, a new logo and name were selected that represent the full integration of the program and its values.

“This rebranding initiative is more than a name change,” said Chanelle Delgado, Youth and Family Services Administrative Program Manager. “It’s a reflection of the transformation in how youth and families are served. 'Uplift' represents our commitment to restorative justice, healing, and holistic support rather than the previous punitive assumptions.”

Reimagining Youth Support Through Restorative Justice

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a suspension of traditional Teen Court elements, including in-court proceedings and the Teen Attorney Program. During this time, it became apparent that meaningful transformation occurred not in the courtroom, but during intake, when trust was built and needs were assessed. Individualized plans were created in collaboration with the youth and their families.

Some key elements of the former model remain in place. Successful participants may be asked to pay it forward by serving as co-leaders for future participants, ensuring that a key element of peer-to-peer support remains.

While the name and visual identity have changed, the partnerships, referral pathways, and commitment to serving youth remain the same and have expanded. The program continues to operate as a pre-adjudicated diversion program, supporting youth referred for school code of conduct violations, with expanded options to include social referrals for earlier access to support.

The program remains a trusted partner to local schools, juvenile probation, the District Attorney’s office, community organizations, and families. This rebrand enhances our ability to connect with youth and families in ways that are clear, trauma-informed, and focused on growth rather than punishment.

As Santa Fe County looks ahead, the Uplift Youth Program serves as a symbol of progress, anchored in restorative practices and fueled by a commitment to empowering the next generation.
