Fire Marshal lifts ban on open burning permits

SANTA FE, N.M., Oct. 6, 2026—Santa Fe County lifted the ban on open burning permits, Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Over the past several weeks, Santa Fe County received significant precipitation, accompanied by cooler temperatures and increased moisture. Based on these changing conditions, the Fire Marshal determined that the County's current open burning permit ban is no longer necessary.

Lifting the County restriction provides an opportunity for residents and communities to conduct vegetation management and defensible space work as we move into the fall and begin preparing for next year's fire season. Permitted open burning is an option for reducing accumulated vegetation and other potential wildfire fuels, as long as the burning is conducted with the applicable permits and fire safety requirements.

This Fire Marshal Order, effective Oct. 6, rescinds Fire Marshal Order 5.26.26.01. Residents with current Santa Fe County open burning permits may resume burning under those permits, and residents may apply for new County open burning permits online free of charge.

Santa Fe County Fire Department will continue to monitor conditions and coordinate with the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department's Forestry Division regarding State level fire conditions and other restrictions or allowances on public lands.
