Help Santa Fe County update the Community Wildfire Protection Plan

SANTA FE, N.M., May 1, 2026—The Santa Fe County Fire Department is updating its Community Wildfire Protection Plan, with a comment period open to the public from May 8 to May 24. The plan will provide background information, a risk assessment, and recommendations for fuel reduction projects, public outreach and education, ways to reduce wildfire risks, and fire response.
The purpose of the plan is to assist in protecting lives and reducing property loss due to wildfire. The plan will include community feedback and the compilation of documents, reports, and data developed by a wide array of contributors. Community input is important so that the final plan reflects local conditions, community priorities, and on-the-ground knowledge.
The draft version of the plan will be available for public review from May 8 through May 24 on the Santa Fe County Wildland Division webpage. You can submit comments through the online portal beginning on May 8.
There is also a public survey, available now, to help County staff understand the community’s concerns about wildfire risks and what efforts the community would like to see to further reduce wildfire risk and increase homeowner resources. Survey responses will help shape project recommendations and resources that will be included in the final draft of the plan.
For more information, attend a free webinar scheduled for May 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
