Santa Fe County Assessor’s Office unveils key updates for property owners in 2026

SANTA FE, N.M., May 5, 2026—The Santa Fe County Assessor’s Office is rolling out several important legislative updates for 2026 designed to expand benefits for residents, specifically veterans, and to enhance the quality of service provided to the Santa Fe County community.

A major change taking effect this year expands the disabled veterans’ property tax exemption. Veterans with service-connected disability ratings of 100% and below are now eligible for a portion of the exemption, broadening access to meaningful tax relief. This enhancement stems from voter approval in 2024 and was formally implemented through House Bill 285 during the 2026 New Mexico Legislative Session, later signed into law by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The updated framework for administering the exemption was developed through coordinated efforts from the New Mexico Department of Taxation and Revenue, the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services, New Mexico Counties (NMC), the NMC Assessors’ Affiliate, and supporting state legislators.

To reflect these updates, Notices of Value were mailed to property owners on May 1, 2026. In light of the adjusted timeline, residents now have 30 days from the mailing date to apply for exemptions, benefits, or to file property valuation appeals.

The Assessor’s Office continues to prioritize transparency, efficiency, and accessibility in serving the public.
