Santa Fe County Clerk Joins National Discussion on AI Ethics in Election Communications
Washington, D.C. -- Santa Fe County Clerk Katharine E. Clark participated in a national convening this week alongside election officials and communications professionals nationwide to examine the ethical and practical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in election communications.
The convening, held Tuesday, April 15, at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy, was hosted in partnership with The Elections Group and The Discourse Lab. The invitation-only event brought together a select group of election leaders and civic experts to explore the rapidly evolving role of generative AI in voter engagement and public outreach.
The agenda focused on several critical areas, including:
- How election offices are currently using or testing AI in voter communication
- Ethical considerations and risks posed by generative technologies
- Gaps in guidance, tools, and shared resources across jurisdictions
“This was an important opportunity to see how local election offices interact with AI and how they can be prepared in the future,” said Clerk Clark.
Clerk Clark is a nationally recognized expert on the intersection of artificial intelligence and elections. With a background in cognitive science and a track record of innovation, she has been invited to speak on multiple national panels in 2025 addressing the ethical use of AI in civic communications and election infrastructure.
Participants at the convening also examined how local election offices—especially at the county level—can remain agile and prepared as technology and policy landscapes shift.
The convening featured diverse representation from election offices, academic institutions, and nonpartisan civic organizations committed to ethical innovation in democracy.
