Santa Fe County Enacts Fireworks Ban to Reduce Wildfire Risk
SANTA FE, NM – On June 10, 2025, the Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners adopted Resolution 2025-65, declaring extreme or severe drought conditions and banning the sale and use of certain fireworks in the unincorporated and wildland areas of Santa Fe County.
Due to persistent drought and the immediate danger of range, brush, grass, and forest fires, the Santa Fe County Fire Marshal proposed a ban on the sale and use of certain fireworks, including missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets, and ground audible devices. The resolution is effective June 10 through July 10, 2025, and may be extended if dry conditions persist.
“This fireworks ban is a preventive measure to protect lives, property, and the environment,” said Fire Marshal Jaome Blay. “We urge all residents to avoid personal use of fireworks and instead attend professionally produced public displays.”
While the resolution restricts high-risk fireworks, certain low-impact fireworks are still permissible for use under strict safety guidelines.
These include:
- Ground and hand-held sparkling devices
- Cone fountains
- Crackling devices
- Cylindrical fountains
- Flitter sparklers
- Ground spinners
- Illuminating torches
- Wheels
Permissible fireworks must only be used on paved or barren surfaces with a readily available water source. The public is strongly encouraged to exercise caution and follow all safety recommendations when using these devices.
The Santa Fe County Fire Department takes the potential and risks of wildland fire seriously and emphasizes that wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility.
