This checklist is designed to help participants prepare for the annual pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chimayó.
Step 1 Several weeks before the pilgrimage

Have and share your intended route in advance

Set designated check-in points along the way

Arrange pick-up and drop-off locations, keeping heavy traffic congestion in mind
Step 2 The week of the pilgrimage

Be aware of road closures and adjust pick-up/drop-off locations as necessary

Check the weather forecast for the days you will be walking

Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions

Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection
Safety Walking during low-light conditions

Wear bright, visible colors and avoid black or dark clothing

Carry a flashlight or glow stick

Wear a reflective safety vest or wristbands
On route During your pilgrimage

Wear comfortable shoes

Follow posted signs and stay on designated pedestrian paths

Carry plenty of water and snacks to stay hydrated (restrooms are provided along the route)

Stay off the roadway and avoid walking in highway medians

Walk in groups of at least two for safety and visibility
Transit Transportation options
The North Central Regional Transit District (NCRTD) Blue Bus may offer special services on routes in and around Chimayó to support pilgrims.
Motorists: anticipate substantial delays on roads leading to and around Chimayó. Plan for significantly increased travel times if you are traveling in the area.
