Commission Endorses Health Security Act: Urges Passage During Legislative Session

The Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners has passed a resolution urging the New Mexico Legislature to pass the Health Security Act during the 30 day 2008 Legislative Session.  “In New Mexico, counties are on the frontline of the health care crisis.  We are making our position clear” said County Commissioner Harry Montoya “The legislature will be presented with a variety of reform options this session but the Health Security Act is the only proposal that reduces health care costs and has strong public support - 135 diverse New Mexico organizations and 27 cities and counties have endorsed it.”

The health care crisis in New Mexico continues to worsen: one out of four New Mexicans are uninsured, premiums are escalating at double digit rates, co-pays are increasing and pharmaceutical drug costs are rising.  This results in a social and economic burden for the affected families, employers, health care providers, and Santa Fe County.

The Health Security Act offers a comprehensive solution enabling New Mexico to set up its own health care plan that would guarantee that all New Mexicans - regardless of age, employment or health status – will have comprehensive, affordable and quality health coverage.  By pooling most New Mexicans into one health risk pool, costs would be contained, administrative complexity reduced, and uncompensated care would be eliminated.
