Santa Fe County launches 2026 summer “Don’t Get Shackled” campaign

Photo: This summer's DWI campaign features a roadrunner wearing shackles, with the slogan, "You can't outrun a DWI." Don't be shackled by the consequences of drinking and driving. Like a roadrunner that can't run, a DWI takes your freedom. Make a plan and always find a safe way home if you've been drinking.
SANTA FE, N.M., June 4, 2026—The Santa Fe County DWI Prevention Program launches its 2026 summer public awareness campaign with a simple message for residents and visitors alike: every person deserves a safe roadway, and DWI is 100 percent preventable when we each do our part.
Across Santa Fe County, residents will see prevention messaging in the places where summer life happens most, including local bars, restaurants, liquor stores, cannabis dispensaries, coffee shops, and community gathering spaces. The goal is to keep DWI prevention education visible, approachable, and part of everyday decision making.
This year’s campaign brings a distinctly New Mexico touch to a serious message:
“Don’t get shackled by a DWI. Even the fastest roadrunner can’t outrun shackles—neither can you. Choose a safe ride home.”
Featuring the iconic New Mexico roadrunner, the campaign uses a familiar symbol of speed and awareness to remind residents that quick decisions matter, and that consequences cannot be outrun.
Throughout the summer, partners will share these messages through:
- Napkins, coasters and take out bags in restaurants, bars and breweries
- Take out bags in liquor stores and cannabis dispensaries
- Coffee sleeves in local coffee shops
- Posters in community spaces
This approach meets people where they are and keeps safety present in the moment, not as an afterthought.
The Santa Fe County DWI Prevention Program continues to support safe transportation options through the Take a Ride on Us initiative.
On weekends and during select community events, the County provides $10 Uber codes to help residents and visitors get home safely after social activities. Each code may be redeemed up to two times per person, offering flexible support during high activity periods throughout the summer. Safe ride codes are regularly updated and shared through the Santa Fe County DWI Prevention Program webpage and social media channels, making it easy to check availability before heading out.
The DWI Prevention Program will be at local festivities, markets, and community events throughout the summer. Stop by outreach tables to learn more. Free shirts, caps, and campaign materials will be available at select events. Follow the program on Facebook and Instagram for updates on upcoming locations and events.
Impaired driving remains a preventable cause of serious crashes in New Mexico, with real impacts on families and communities. Prevention efforts like this focus on awareness, access, and shared responsibility.
The message remains simple: plan ahead, look out for each other, and never drive impaired. Whether it is a designated driver, rideshare or a friend, a safe ride home is always within reach.
