Santa Fe County Opens Emergency Operations

Santa Fe, NM. February 8, 2007 -- The recent warming trend has finally caused the snow to
melt which has given rise to a new challenge for those who live in Santa Fe County’s rural areas
– mud. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is now open to help County residents deal with
hazardous situations because of the mud. “We have some families who are facing real
challenges because of the mud” said Michael Anaya, Santa Fe County Commissioner (District 3),
“Our road crews and fire department have been able to help families who were stranded and had
run out of food and medication.”
The effect of technology, equipment, and human operations on mud in rural areas is limited.
Crews from the Santa Fe County Public Works Department have been clearing roads and
driveways from 5am to midnight. They will be working all weekend. “To help increase our ability
to respond, we've added private crews to work on contract until we get through this” said Director
of Public Works, James Lujan.
The EOC will be open 7 am to 7 pm, seven days a week. “Opening the EOC allows us to
effectively track and respond to resident calls for service” said Santa Fe County Manager Roman
Abeyta, “We can then be strategic about how to best use County resources to help.”
For mud-related issues, residents should call the EOC at (505) 995-1842. For all other
emergencies, residents should continue to use 911.
Guidelines for dealing with the muddy conditions:
· Travel in the early mornings or evenings when mud is frozen
· Park in the closest safe, dry area
· From the road, walk in or get a family member to pick you up in an ATV, if you have that option
