“The Lost Mail Zone”: County Assessor’s Office Reminds Property Owners to Keep Mailing Information Current

Santa Fe, NM- Picture this: an important envelope drifts through the mail stream, only to vanish into the void, never to reach its rightful owner. You’ve just entered The Lost Mail Zone.

Every year, thousands of critical documents, including Notices of Value, are returned to the Santa Fe County Assessor’s Office as “undeliverable.” To encourage residents to keep their information up to date, the Assessor’s Office has launched a creative new outreach campaign called "The Lost Mail Zone". Inspired by the eerie, otherworldly tone of The Twilight Zone, the campaign features a short video dramatizing the real consequences of failing to update your mailing address. The video is available now on YouTube and the Assessor’s Lost Mail Zone webpage: https://shorturl.at/hiFZJ.

“This campaign is fun and a little dramatic, but it highlights a very real issue,” said Santa Fe County Assessor Isaiah F. Romero. “When notices are returned to our office, it often never makes it back to the property owner, and that can create confusion, frustration, and even unnecessary tax issues.”

The Assessor’s Office relies on the mailing address it has on file to send official correspondence, including annual Notices of Value. If a property owner has moved or changed their address without notifying the office, those documents may not be delivered.

The Assessor urges residents who have moved in the past six months or anyone unsure of the address listed for their property to update their information today. It’s quick, easy, and the best way to ensure you stay informed and compliant with your tax responsibilities.

The Santa Fe County Assessor’s Office is responsible for maintaining accurate property records and ensuring fair property valuations across the County. Don’t let your documents vanish into the lost mail zone. Update your mailing address online at www.santafecountynm.gov/assessor, or contact the office directly at (505) 986-6300 or assessor@santafecountynm.gov.

Because in the end, the only thing scarier than The Lost Mail Zone is missing important information about your property.
