Non-Owner Occupied Short-Term Rental Business License Checklist
This checklist helps guide applicants through the process of obtaining a Non-Owner Occupied Short-Term Rental (STR) Business License in Santa Fe County.
Before You Begin
- The dwelling must have been legally constructed with proper permitting.
- Review all permitting requirements before applying.
- Schedule an STR application review appointment with Building & Development Services.
- Appointments can be scheduled by calling 505-995-2700.

Application Steps
Required Documents
- Site Plan
- Floor Plan Highlighting STR Area
- Current Water Meter Reading (if property has water restrictions)
- Deed and Survey Plat
- Proof of Property Taxes Paid
- Fire Self-Certification Form
- State CRS Number
Document Details
Assigned 911 Address Form
Request by emailing e911addressing@santafecountynm.gov or calling staff. Include your name, phone number, and property address or tax account number.
Site Plan
A visual map of your property showing:
- All structures
- Parking spaces designated for STR guests
- Driveway access
- Trash or solid waste storage areas
This can be created using a satellite image from Google Maps or the County Assessor website.
Floor Plan Highlighting STR Area
- Illustrate interior layout of the dwelling
- Label rooms and exits
- Measure and note the square footage of the STR space
Floor plans can be obtained from the Santa Fe County Assessor Parcel Map Search tool.
Current Water Meter Reading
If the property has water restrictions, a water meter reading must be provided. If no meter exists, one must be installed before applying.
Deed and Survey Plat
Request from the Santa Fe County Clerk’s Office 505-986-6280.
Proof of Property Taxes Paid
Request a Tax Certificate from the Treasurer’s Office: 505-986-6245 treasurer@santafecountynm.gov
Fire Self-Certification Form
Complete the fire safety inspection form and bring the signed document to your appointment.
State CRS Number
Register with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department to obtain a CRS ID number.
Application Review Appointment
- $375 Business License Fee
- Review documents with permitting staff
- If approved, receive your STR Business License Number
- If incomplete, staff will provide guidance on missing items
Neighbor Notification Requirement
After approval, applicants must send notice letters to adjacent property owners and any applicable HOA. Santa Fe County will provide the mailing list and required notice template.
